Social networking giant Facebook has launched their new feature named “Watch Party” on Wednesday. After a long six months of testing, they have now officially launched this feature where the members of Facebook groups can invite and watch videos together in real-time and also comment.

Erin Connolly, Product Manager at Facebook, said: “Once a Watch Party is started, participants can watch videos, live or recorded, and interact with one another around them in the same moment. We’ve been focused on building new ways to bring people together around video, create connections, and ignite conversations; Watch Party is the next step in bringing this vision to life.”.

In case of enjoying this feature outside of groups, he added: “We believe that if people can start a Watch Party directly from their profile or from a video they’re watching, the experience of watching video on Facebook can become even more fun and social.”

Watching videos outside of groups generally refers to the verified profiles of celebrities, public figure or organizations but according to Connolly’s statement, it is also expected to available for all type of pages soon.

How to start a Facebook “Watch Party”?

After the long wait and testing, the “Watch Party” feature also reveals the plans of Facebook to compete against YouTube by utilizing video streaming space.

To use this new feature the members of a group have to find or host a video and invite to join other members. There will be a chat window where members can chat while watching the video and express their opinions.

Additional features to enjoy:

Facebook has launched 2 new features which were not available during the testing period. One of these features is “Co-Hosting” where the host can enable others to add videos and continue the party. The second feature is called “Crowdsourcing” where group members can suggest the host which videos to add and start the “Watch Party”.

As of now, Facebook “Watch Party” feature is limited to groups only. Currently, “Watch Party” can be enjoyed on a Videos, Facebook Live or recorded clips. However, they have not revealed when members can enjoy live videos feature on pages and profiles too.
